How healthy is the air you stay in?

Clean air is essential for good health, and this is especially true when it comes to indoor air.

In Middle Eastern region, we spend most of our time inside a closed environment; at home, at work and in recreational environments. Most people, however, are unaware of the effects that poor indoor air quality can have on their health.

International studies have ranked present indoor air pollution as one of the most important environmental problems in the developed world. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air is up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air, and most of us spend an astonishing 90% of our life indoors.

Indoor Air Pollution

Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has been tied to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, trouble concentrating, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Also, some specific diseases have been linked to specific air contaminants or indoor environments, like asthma with damp indoor environments.

Cigarette smoke particles and volatile organic compounds VOC’s (found in household cleaning compounds) also pose a risk to health. Exposure to various components such as VOC’s increases the likelihood of experiencing symptoms of sick building syndrome.

Symptoms of poor indoor air quality are very broad and depend on various contaminants. They can easily be mistaken for symptoms of other illnesses such as allergies, stress, colds and influenza.

- Sneezing
- Watery eyes
